Graham Parker & the rumour : Squeezing out sparks (1979)

Un artiste attachant. Voilà comment je résume en quelques mots le pedigree de Graham Parker. Avec 35 albums à son actif, un fan invétéré ( Naulleau), toujours placé mais jamais gagnant ( la définition de culte !) , Il a tout pour (me) plaire.  Et je ne vais pas être original pour une fois : squeezing out  sparks est bien son meilleur effort ( pas de loin mais naturellement) comme le désigne la critique. Mais pourquoi donc ? Tout simplement car ses chansons n’ont autant fait mouche ! Celles-ci baignées dans un adage pub rock – New wave – pop sont accrocheuses ( « local girls ») , hargneuses ( « nobody hurts you »), énergiques (« protection ») ! Notre homme toujours en colère a passé un cap tant au niveau des compositions que du chant.  Album intense où jamais la pression ne redescend pendant ses 41 minutes, squeezing out sparks recèle de véritables pépites comme la ballade poignante sur l’avortement  » you can’t be too strong » ou le puissant « passion is no ordinary word » ( bien dit!).comme quoi on peut allier force et sensibilité. Malheureusement Parker restera toujours en deuxième division et toujours comparé à ses contemporains (Costello, Springsteen…). Tant mieux pour moi : j’ai toujours préféré les losers aux winners. Et cet opus en est la preuve.

Starshooter : pas fatigué (1981)

Le disque maudit du rock français ! N’ayons pas peur des mots ! Pas fatigué, dernier album des lyonnais de Starshooter aurait dû être un classique du rock made in France (en terme de succès, n’est-ce pas) Hélas il n’en fut point. Après un départ en fanfare (le bon groupe au bon moment) marqué par un punk décomplexé, des simples efficaces…et quelques scandales (« Get baque »), le combo se perdra en se cherchant son style (variété ? pop ? new wave ?) et accumulera les désillusions, les échecs et ne trouva pas son public. Le groupe est alors dans une voie sans issue, sans maison de disques. C’est alors qu’une major CBS décida d’investir sur la bande, persuadée de son potentiel (de ventes, of course) et de pouvoir rivaliser avec Telephone et Trust . Bonjour le producteur aguerri Mick Glossop (Magazine, Ruts, Pil, Skids), au revoir l’ambiguïté d’identité (rock n’ roll !) et voilà le groupe remis en selle pour en découdre ! Après un premier simple « quel bel avenir » à la fois carré et tranchant ( limite heavy metal) qui faisait figure de test de travail histoire de se jauger, le groupe part en tournée estivale à renfort de publicité et de promotion mais la mayonnaise ne prend pas et les ventes du 45 tours sont décevantes. S’ensuit la sortie de l’album pas fatigué en novembre 1981 précédé de l’efficace « papillon de nuit » en 45 tours. Le résultat est bluffant : gros son, riffs agressifs, rythmes décousus et textes sombres sont au programme de cet album VRAIMENT rock. Glossop pousse le groupe à se surpasser, à se discipliner pour viser juste. Rien n’est à jeter dans cet album efficace et désabusé où les musiciens sont en fait fatigués de 5 ans de tournées et de la pression de la maison de disques. Starshooter sonnait anglais à la Jam en plus punk et avait atteint sa maturité. Il s’est même autorisé un final reggae rock « fatigué » tout en maitrise et tout simplement magique. Malheureusement quand ça ne veut pas, ça ne veut pas. Starshooter n’arriva pas à jouer en premier division (le rock et la France, ça fait deux) et à satisfaire les espoirs placés en lui. Le groupe lâcha l’affaire et se sépara en 1982. Quel dommage ! l’insuccès ne devrait pas acter la fin d’une aventure. Mais bon, il y a la jurisprudence Van Gogh. On ne sait jamais…
