XTC : English Settlement (1982)

Cet album est magique ! English Settlement est typiquement l’album sorti dans les années 80 qui n’a pas vieilli d’un poil mais qui au contraire se bonifie avec le temps. Je dirais même que c’est un trésor intarissable tellement sa musique est universelle, jouée avec des doigts d’or et remplie de trouvailles plus envoutantes les unes que les autres. English Settlement est un tournant dans la carrière du groupe, à savoir qu’il se détache des racines new wave de ses débuts pour lorgner vers la pop avec un grand P. Je dirais même qu’il change complètement de méthode de travail. Au lieu de foncer tête baissée, il cherche tout d’abord à écrire des mélodies raffinées et légères. Jamais le groupe n’aura ainsi été autant charmeur, décomplexé. En plus d’un gros travail d’écriture, il décide d’inclure de nouvelles influences jusqu’alors inédite comme l’afro beat, des rythmes latino ou encore des chœurs de paysans médiévaux. Bref, il se fait plaisir et ça s’entend ! Dans ce cas-là, difficile de se louper ! Toutes les chansons sont remplies de finesse dans une veine pastorale incomparable, comme si on était transporté dans un tourbillon sonore, dans un monde féérique où rien ne peut nous arriver et qui nous ressemble tant. Et puis, il y a toujours ces sons tordus, banaux d’XTC qui donne à l’ensemble un coté étrange, proche du fantastique. Le groupe réussit alors enfin à toucher le grand public avec notamment le génial « Senses Working Overtime ». De « Runaways » à « Snowman », on passe par toutes émotions, les styles musicaux avec inspiration rarement aussi poignante, dans la quête de la pop absolue. Bref, l’album est à l’image de la pochette représentant le cheval de Huffington : soigné, passionnant, séduisant. Un chef D’œuvre !
